What can the name of a school tell us about the history of a community?

This summer, take a journey through Abbotsford's past by exploring the stories behind the names of our schools. From community builders and educators to Indigenous leaders and local landmarks, each school has a unique story that reflects the people, places and values that have helped shape Abbotsford.

For 36 years, Chris Kelly has dedicated her career to supporting Indigenous students and families in the Abbotsford School District. As a First Nations and Métis educator with deep family ties to the local community, she has spent her career helping generations of students feel seen, supported and connected. 

Here's a throwback to the annual tradition at Yale Secondary School, where students celebrate Canada's birthday with students from its feeder schools before summer break.

For more than 20 years, Canada Day in May has brought school communities together through a carnival filled with student-run games, activities, and food stalls. Leadership students in Grades 9–12 take the lead in creating a fun and memorable experience for younger students while building connections across the Yale family of schools.

The fifth annual Robert Bateman Open golf tournament brought together alumni, community members, local businesses, and Abbotsford School District staff at Ledgeview Golf Course in support of the Robert Bateman Golf Academy.

Now in its fifth year, the tournament continues to grow in both participation and impact. This year's event welcomed a record 22 teams, making it the largest Bateman Open in tournament history. The event raised approximately $7,000 to support student travel opportunities, equipment purchases, and program enhancements within the Golf Academy.

Students from schools across the Abbotsford School District gathered at Mill Lake Park on recently for a day of storytelling, drumming, dancing, art, and cultural learning in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day which happens this Sunday.

Presented in partnership with the City of Abbotsford's Culture City program series, the annual event brought together students, staff, Indigenous artists, performers, and community members for a day of learning and connection.

After months of daily rehearsals, students from Barrowtown, Dormick Park ,and Ten-Broeck Elementary came together to share a powerful message of stewardship, reconciliation and community through Xa Xa Téméxw, a Sacred Earth Day concert celebrating Indigenous language, culture and learning.
