Maylloween Brings Thomas A. Swift Elementary Together to Support B.C. Children’s Hospital
Students at Thomas A. Swift Elementary School showed that big ideas can come from even the youngest learners.
This spring, Mrs. Jones’ Grade 3/4 class organized “Maylloween,” a school-wide fundraiser in support of BC Children's Hospital after learning that one of their classmates is currently receiving treatment there.
Students and staff were invited to dress up in Halloween costumes by donating $4 or more. The event raised nearly $3,000 for the hospital.
The idea began when student Uday suggested organizing a fundraiser. The class then worked together to develop a proposal and pitch the idea to their principal. After receiving support, the students presented Maylloween to the entire school community, encouraging everyone to take part.
Harveer later came up with the name “Maylloween.” Students said they hope the funds raised can help purchase more equipment for patients and reduce waiting times for children receiving care.
“I thought it was really cool and a fun project, and I was really excited,” said Harper.
The project quickly grew beyond the classroom and became a true community effort. Harper and Hannah hosted an iced tea stand outside their home over a weekend and raised more than $500 to support the fundraiser. In addition, gym teacher Mrs. Miettinen raised another $100 through a community group, helping contribute to the success of the class initiative.
“When I know the money is going to help a lot of people, it makes me happy,” shared student Emma. “I don’t like waiting.”
The fundraiser highlighted the compassion, leadership, and creativity of Thomas A. Swift students, proving that even eight and nine-year-olds can make a meaningful impact in their community.
