Celebrating Long Term Service: Kenyon’s 40+ Years of Building Safe Schools
For over 40 years, Kenyon has been a cornerstone of the facilities management team, ensuring that the schools he serves in the Abbotsford School District remain safe, functional, and accommodating. In this interview, he shares insights into his career journey, the challenges he has faced, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
How did your journey in facilities management begin?
My background is in construction. I had my own business and worked as a registered apprentice before transitioning into the school district’s custodial and maintenance department. My goal was always to move into construction-related work, and over time, I was able to do just that. One major milestone was when I challenged the provincial and interprovincial trade certification tests and passed both. That was a big step in proving my skills and moving forward in my career. Another key moment was becoming the Project Coordinator, a role I’ve now held for about 15 years.
What does your role as Project Coordinator involve?
It’s a diverse role. I manage building information, oversee renovations, coordinate permits, and ensure safety regulations are followed. My team also handles accessibility modifications, asbestos testing, and setting up essential facilities like laundry centres for schools. Every day brings something new, whether it’s assessing lease agreements, placing shipping containers securely, or helping plan building upgrades.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I haven’t really thought about leaving a legacy, but I suppose my impact is in the work I’ve done and the knowledge I’ve shared. I’ve been involved in volunteer efforts and professional development, and I’ve trained new team members who will carry on the work. Seeing someone I’ve mentored succeed is very rewarding. As retirement approaches, I know I’ve built something meaningful, and I’m proud of the work I’ve done.
Kenyon’s journey is one of perseverance, adaptability, and dedication. His story serves as an inspiration for those entering the field of facilities management, proving that hard work and integrity can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career.
